Very old fashioned pub with a coal fire , in a small village in the Yorkshire moors , I imagine it gets busy in the summer with walkers and tourists

Giving this place 1 star is painful! We weren't made to feel welcome at all. The first thing the grumpy owner said to us was to make sure we turn our taps off properly because it makes loud noises through the pipes below. We never got a hello or welcome from him. He blanked us the whole time we were there. He was unpleasant to his local/regular, too, who seemed to have to talk to the back of his rude head constantly. The lady on the bar was difficult also and we were made to feel like we weren't welcome. We remained polite throughout but it wasn't replicated. We sat in the lounge with fire for a couple of nice pale ales then we went to the fox and hounds for food and drinks. It was a 10 minute walk away. We stayed there for a few hours. I couldn't bare to give any more money to the Duke. If you are looking to book a stay in Danby go to the Fox. I wish we had

Great value Inn with accommodation and friendly locals with a great community feel about the place. Very friendly staff, (Charles), and great atmosphere. Rooms are cosy, comfortable and well furnished/equipped with TV, ensuite, radio, Wi-Fi and really comfortable bed. Great value for money. Evening meal and breakfast should be booked in advance, and that helps the very efficient service and quality of the food. Dinner saw me tuck into a homemade Steak Pie, with side veg and chips. This was no microwave pie passed off as homemade. I have never had a pie so filled with quality, succulent steak chunks and thick gravy as I had last night, all washed down with a pint or two of the local ale. Breakfast this morning was more of the same! Quality ingredients created a quality, fresh-cooked breakfast to set you up for the day. Thanks to Charles and the team at this Inn for making my stay a warm, welcoming and memorable one. Truly deserves a 5 Star Rating. Many thanks, Ian

Lovely warm welcome from the guy behind the bar who was very helpful to us with our bikes and wet gear. Food is excellent, both for evening meal and at breakfast. Room was comfortable and clean. Really did feel well looked after and would not hesitate to return.

Had a lovely 3 night stay, at the Duke of Wellington. Big thank you to Grant, the owner who's cooking was exceptional, the meals were excellent. Also Charles who served our meals and breakfast, nice guy, very friendly and professional. And last, but not least, sonya and Louise, who work behind the bar. Two lovely ladies, who made us feel very welcome. Overall, our stay was brilliant and would gladly stay again.

Well what came we say. First visited in 2020 and got engaged here and we have been back every year since. We have just arrived home today after another fantastic weekend. Grant saves us the same room every year, this fella never stop from first thing in a morning until gone midnight every night. He is so accommodating and nothing is ever too much trouble for him he takes time out to talk to you to make sure everything is 100% Charlie and Sonia never stop also again they are so pleasant and helpful. What a team you have Grant... Food is fantastic and cannot fault it one bit, we have tried almost everything on the menu. The rooms are clean, tidy and very well presented, the whole pub to be honest is immaculate again Grant and the team do a fantastic job here. Never had a bad pint in all the time we have been here, the bar, glasses everything are spotless. The locals are so friendly and make you feel welcome too. Great bunch I could go on and on about this place but you need to visit it yourself to see how great the place is and what a fantastic job Grant and the team do and I can assure you, you will not be disappointed We will be back again next year and if time allows we will go for a long weekend this year over winter too.

Very happy to stay there. Bonus having dog room as door straight out to the car for cases etc, no stairs to climb. Sonia was very kind to us also. Would poss book again. No more weddings though at Danby Castle.

My daughter and I stayed for one night when completing the Coast to Coast walk. The hosts were friendly and helpful, twin room was spacious and comfortable and food (breakfast and evening dinner) hearty and tasty with lots of choice, including vegan options. We would happily stay again and have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Don't go here if you aren't a local. Two different attitudes depending on whether the owner knows you. I asked the bar staff for food. The lady who was polite and pleasant said there were no tables. I found a table but she then said I would have to ask the owner. I did so in my most courteous manner. I got an abrupt no. No explanation as to why, no attempt at any pleasantries at all. No regard at all for customer service. Also the beer was dissapointing it was ordinary at best. Don't know how this pub made it to the good beer guide.

Beautiful setting for a wonderfully quaint Yorkshire pub/inn. The staff are friendly and accommodating and the rooms are homely and perfect for a weekend away. The food is lovely and warming, we particularly enjoyed the pies and the smoked venison. The surrounding views are stunning and the Inn is merely a 25 minute drive across the moors to surrounding tourist resorts such as Whitby and Robin Hood Bay. The Inn is perfect for walkers, with endless public footpath routes which can be walked from right outside the door. The North Yorkshire Moors visitors centre is less than a mile down the road where you can find information on routes for walking and cycling and viewpoints. We will definitely be coming back to stay again :)

Waited until the times stated on its website ( ' meals usually served between 7 and 8.30 pm, but can be earlier or later!!?) Walked there from our guest house at 7 pm, bought a drink on arrival, but when we asked about eating ( people were eating) we were told ' sorry, only serving residents tonight! ( a Monday evening). No mention on their website about this, causing people to travel for nothing, and as we walked, in the country village setting, it was now dark, and by the time we got back to our accommodation, it was too late to drive elsewhere as very rural, and I had now had a drink! Had to go without an evening meal, after a very long drive to the Nort Yorkshire Moors, and researching the pubs own comprehensive website beforehand, no mention of only serving residents on Mondays or recommending to pre-book! Not Good customer service, we would have probably eaten there every evening for the full week, but this put us off completely.
